A rotating cutting wheel takes the stump down below ground level and reduces it to chips. The root system goes with it, so the tree cannot send up suckers every spring.
That clears the trip hazard and the eyesore, and it takes away habitat for termites, ants and other wood-boring insects you would rather were not setting up fifteen feet from your foundation.
It also gives you the ground back. You cannot lay a patio, run a fence line or level a lawn around a stump.
