Structural support for the tree you would rather not lose.
Not every structurally weak tree has to come out. Cabling and bracing is the answer for a tree worth keeping that has a fault in it: a co-dominant stem slowly splitting at a tight union, a heavy limb reaching a long way out over a driveway, an old maple with a crack you can put a finger into.
Flexible steel cable goes high in the canopy to share load between limbs and limit how far they move in wind. Braces are rigid rods threaded through the union itself, where a split needs physically holding together. Done right it takes the strain off the weak point and the tree carries on.
It is not permanent and it is not a substitute for judgement. Some trees are too far gone and the honest answer is removal. But plenty of trees people are told to take out can be supported instead.
